Our Strategic Anchors

Transparency and Partnerships

We have a full-time team of quality assurance technicians in the field daily. They evaluate performance, report feedback, and assist service drivers. If you have any concerns about your service, you can request a custom evaluation at your location. If you call because we’ve made a mistake, we will own up to it with integrity and fix any issues. This is also the case with vendors and our own team. We want mutual respect in all our partnerships.

Discernible Standards of Service and Operation

What sets us apart is our high customer service standards, what we deliver, and how we do it. Our disinfecting process is the most thorough in the industry. Our quality assurance team in the field ensures our portable restrooms are the cleanest around.

Exceptional Customer Experience

Our customer service representatives will work with you to make challenging situations successful, from what is delivered in the field to what is delivered in your bill. We take care of people and solve their needs. For example, if your bathroom is out of service, we deliver a restroom right away with our same-day emergency delivery service.

Our Founders, Mike and Diana Pauling

In 1965, Mike Pauling joined the United States Marines and served in Vietnam. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart for his heroism in battle. While recovering from his injuries in Japan, he was joined by his junior high sweetheart, Diana Zeches, and they were married on April 21, 1967.

After an honorable discharge in November 1969, he and Diana returned home to raise a family in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis. He received a BS in Business from the University of Minnesota.

Mike Applied for a
Life-Changing Job

Mike Had an
Entrepreneurial Spirit

Biffs Became a
Family-Run Business

Mike Focused on
Cleaning & Conserving

By the mid-1970s, Mike applied for a job at Satellite Industries, located in Plymouth, Minnesota. He had the impression it was “a company that does something with satellites in space.” However, after being interviewed by the owner and founder of Satellite, Al Hilde, Mike was “shocked as to Satellite’s primary business.” They made portable restrooms.

Always a hard worker, Mike became highly successful in the sales division and, in July 1979, was promoted to vice president of the mobile office group.

Mike Pauling had the entrepreneurial bug, so, in 1986, he and Diana bought a small portable restroom company from Hutchinson, Minnesota, called Biffs. The company had 200 units and two service trucks. The couple built the business slowly at first. Then, in 1992, the Paulings and their two business partners purchased the Portable Restroom Division of Waste Management, and in 1993, that of BFI. On top of that, BFI had previously acquired the service business from Satellite and Al Hilde.

Diana not only shouldered a multitude of management responsibilities but worked hard on behind-the-scenes projects that helped Biffs continue to grow. This would include adding new technology and initiating company procedures.

Mike and Diana’s daughter, Heather, joined the company in 1994. Then, in 1997, Biffs became a completely family-run business when Mike bought out the partners and his son, Derek, started in the early 90s repairing units and driving service routes. Derek then started working in the Finance Department after he’d graduated from college.

“Always a dreamer.” Mike encouraged others to investigate business diversification and “think outside the box.” An excellent example of this is his creation of Biffs Pathfinders, a disinfectant system invented by Mike and produced by Ecolab in the Twin Cities. Going beyond the generic term “sanitizer,” this product is more potent while saving and conserving water.

Mike passed away in 2017, but his vision for Biffs continues to be upheld by the incredible team that fulfills our mission every day: We protect health and dignity where permanent facilities are not available.
